Little Ornaments

Posted by Picasa
Last weekend I actually went to my favorite (not so local) needlework store. It's about 20 miles from my house. Although I visit this city several times a month, I realized I hadn't been there in over a year. That is sad, isn't it?

I truly have enough stitching stuff to last a lifetime, but I just had to buy something.  I settled on just a small purchase of the JCS Halloween issue from a few months ago. My goal is to stitch a few small ornaments this year, and a Halloween ornament seemed like fun.

Have you stitched anything from this issue? Please share a link here if you have a photo of it online as it'd be a blast to check it out.

This past week has been very stressful, and I  truly hope to get in a small stitching block of time soon.

Thanks for stopping by today!

Manicotti and Stitching Inspiration

Soon I will stitch! It has been quite awhile now, but all the crazy busy times have ended for awhile. Now it's time for being 'semi-busy'.

Friday was my last day of work for awhile, and it's our summer break. Hurrah! We worked especially late this summer and we're starting again in early August but nonetheless it's grand to have a break.

Earlier this month we celebrated my husband's birthday, our son's birthday, our son-in-law's birthday, and our son's college graduation. Yesterday we celebrated my mom's 79th birthday. We had a great time at my brother and sister-in-law's house celebrating! I brought the manicotti:

Manicotti

Manicotti

Manicotti Times Two

Manicotti Recipe
Makes one 9 X 13 pan of Manicotti

One box of Manicotti

Sauce:
1 lb ground beef
1 jar of marinara sauce (or make your own)
one garlic clove, minced
oregano

Cook ground beef, add the other ingredients and simmer.

Manicotti Filling:
1 egg
16 ozs ricotta cheese
6 ozs parmesan cheese
8 ozs mozzarella cheese, shredded (place some aside for the top of the dish)
garlic powder
fresh parsley flakes, a few tablespoons
sweet basil, one tablespoon

Cook the noodles so they're not overly soft for easy stuffing. Stuff the noodles with the cheese filling.

Place 1/2 the sauce in a greased 9 X 13 pan, place the stuffed noodles on top, and cover with remaining sauce and the remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Enjoy!

And now for some stitching inspiration:

This piece is called Fantastic Fall Bouquet, and it's designed by Barbara Baatz. (I got this photo of it long ago from a blog, saved it to my computer, but I don't have the stitcher's name and website. If you know the person, please do let me know. For the time being, I just must say thanks to the stitcher of this fine piece!):

I've always loved it, and I finally acquired it sometime back into my stitching pattern stash. I had to purchase it off ebay, as it's out of print and hard to find. It was so worth the hassle! Perhaps I can get started on it sometime soon, but then again free time does fly by quickly. Are there any patterns you are excited to begin soon?

More Inspiration Stitching

Posted by Picasa

This beautiful piece is called "Mermaids of the Deep Blue" and it's from Mirabilia. My daughter loves it, so I think it's in our stitching future! We have taken turns on pieces in the past, so maybe this large piece would be a good candidate for that approach to stitching.

Not sure whether we'll stitch it on the recommended fabric, or if we'll use a different type completely. What do you think?

Stuff to Add to the Sampler

Christmas Eve
Christmas 2007- This slacker here sure doesn't have any lights up yet!

First of all, thanks for your kind comments regarding my niece and her baby. She is still on bedrest, and has been stitching away for many hours while in bed at the hospital.

It's December, and I haven't done a thing for the holidays. Wait, that's not quite right! I did actually buy some much needed items after much searching and driving around. Those reindeer antlers I found will be part of my students' costume for next week's program. Does that count? In the past I've made them out of construction paper, but this year I didn't want to devote hours of my day to that task. It seemed easier to drive around and buy them. Okay, I did find out today that my colleagues found them for 1/4 of the price I paid, but I know the ones I bought are of a higher quality, and will last for years. After all, they're made of genuine synthetic fur.

Last weekend I bought these leaflets for use on the sampler I'm throwing together***:

***Plan- Sort of
(my idea of 'throwing together' is actually a bit more like this plan..., and yes it's still kind of haphazard...)

Now for the leaflets I bought:

I also bought these two leaflets:

I am excited about using some of these elements in the sampler, and I already added the bunny to my work. I'll also be adding some pumpkins, a black cat, and other elements from these patterns to the sampler.

Thanks for stopping by today!

This one is so funny as my great niece Hannah looks so much like her mom in an old photo I have somewhere, when she was the same age. It's sure fun having a great niece!

Wanted to share a few photos of an old treasure I have. This is a needlework book I bought back in 1975. I love it as it explains so well how to do so many surface embroidery stitches:

Do you have any old needlework books that you treasure?

Enjoy your day, and thanks for stopping by!

Stitching Stash and an Updated WIP Photo

I went to class today and turned in that huge project I've been working on for the past six months. I had it bound and printed on Thursday (107 pages!), and the final product passed inspection by my professor. Hurrah! Now I just have to take some more classes, and then I'll be done with this program. I wish I'd have done this a few years ago, but that's just the way it is.

After class I was in the general vicinity of a stitching store, so I decided to stop in and check things out. It's located about 20 miles from my home, so I don't get the chance to go there as often as I'd like to go.

Since I was so happy for having finished my big project, I decided to reward myself. I bought a few patterns for my House and Garden Sampler! Up until now I'd only used patterns I had at home in my very large assortment of old magazines and stitching books. I found several I thought could be useful for my sampler. I'll have to draw these onto the graph paper when I get to the next house in my sampler. First of all, I bought this first one as I liked how the trees and hills looked. I also like the borders on these patterns:

There's No Place Like Home! by Sandra Cozzalino

I liked this pattern for the house in the top right corner, although the smaller house looks good as well:

The Prairie Schooler Farm Fresh

Finally, I bought this pattern for the small-sized houses and use of birds. I will try to incorporate those into the design, too. Here it is:

The Prairie Schooler Birdsong II

Here's the previous progress photo I took of my House and Garden Sampler. I took it back in March, so I've done a little bit since then.

In March:

A closer look at the new house:

And one more of the top two houses:

Just for laughs, here's another look at that rough graph paper layout I did back in October. I think I'm going to change the house in the upper right corner (A version of our house) to a different one. I'm also going to add more houses on the bottom of the piece. There will be ten houses all together, I think. Here's that graph:
Plan-Sort of

I'll have to stitch on it later on tonight!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Tomorrow we are removing some huge, overgrown shrubs from our backyard's far corner. We've lived here for 18 years, but this corner has been awful for ages. I guess I should take some "before" pictures, shouldn't I? Truly I'm ashamed of how bad this corner looks, really.

On a better note, here's a smoke bush (cotinus) that we planted several years ago. Our daughter picked it out as she'd so admired this particular plant at a beautiful gardening center in a different county. It was hard to find one, but we managed to hunt one down and get it planted. I took the photo the other day as I love the purple color of the leaves. It's a decidious shrub, so it's amazing to watch its daily progress in growth and color.

Here's how it looks when it blooms later on in the early summer through fall. The blooms are supposed to look like smoke, hence the name:

It's time to relax some now and celebrate the finish of that huge school project. It's hard to express how elated I am that it's done. Having something like that in your 'to do' list is really a bit much at times.

Thanks for reading my blog, and thanks for your kind comments. I really appreciate your kindness and warmth.
